Mathematics Minor
Requirements for a Minor in Mathematics
Students planning a minor in mathematics must complete the university requirements for a minor as identified in the General Academic Policies section of the Grand Valley State University Undergraduate and Graduate Catalog as well as the requirements listed below.
1. Mathematics (not for teacher certification)
The noncertification mathematics minor requires a minimum GPA of 2.0 and 20 credit hours unduplicated in one's major. Credit in the following courses may not be applied: m 110, MTH 122, m 123, MTH 125, m 131, m 221, m 222, MTH 223, m 225, m 312, m 322, MTH 323, MTH 324, m 329, STA 215. Credit in the following courses requires department approval to be applied to the minor: MTH 380, m 386, m 387, m 399, m 499.
The following courses must be completed:
- MTH 201 - Calculus I (4 credits)
- MTH 202 - Calculus II (4 credits)
- MTH 203 - Calculus III (4 credits) OR MTH 210 - Communicating in Mathematics (4 credits)
- MTH 227 - Linear Algebra I (3 credits) OR MTH 302 - Linear Algebra and Differential Equations (4 credits)
- At least two additional mathematics or statistics courses at the 300 to 400, level at least one of which is a mathematics course.
Note: Credit in only one of MTH 302 or MTH 304 may be applied toward this minor; credit in only one of MTH 227 or MTH 302 may be applied toward this minor.
2. Mathematics (for secondary teacher certification)
The secondary teacher certification mathematics minor requires a minimum GPA of 2.7 and 20 credit hours unduplicated in one's major. Credit in the following courses may not be applied: m 110, MTH 122, m 123, MTH 125, m 131, m 221, m 222, MTH 223, m 225, m 312, STA 215. Credit in the following courses requires department approval to be applied to the minor: MTH 380, m 386, m 387, m 399, m 499.
The following courses must be completed:
- MTH 201 - Calculus I (4 credits)
- MTH 202 - Calculus II (4 credits)
- MTH 210 - Communicating in Mathematics (4 credits)
- MTH 227 - Linear Algebra I (3 credits)
- MTH 229 - Mathematical Activities for Secondary Teachers (3 credits) OR m 329 - Teaching Middle Grades Mathematics (3 credits)
- MTH 350 - Modern Algebra I (3 credits)
- MTH 331 - Euclidean Geometry (3 credits)
- STA 312 - Probability and Statistics (3 credits)
3. Mathematics (for elementary teacher certification)
The elementary teacher certification mathematics minor requires a minimum GPA of 2.7 and 20 credit hours unduplicated in one's major. Credit in the following courses may not be applied: m 110, MTH 122, m 123, MTH 125, m 131, m 221, m 222, MTH 223, m 225, m 312, STA 215. Credit in the following courses requires department approval to be applied to the minor: MTH 380, m 386, m 387, m 399, m 499.
The following courses must be completed:
- MTH 201 - Calculus I (4 credits)
- MTH 202 - Calculus II (4 credits)
- MTH 210 - Communicating in Mathematics (4 credits)
- m 322 - Geometry for Elementary Teachers (3 credits)
- MTH 323 - Probability and Statistics for Elementary Teachers (3 credits)
- MTH 324 - Algebra for Elementary Teachers (3 credits)
- And one additional approved course
